Both Men’s and Women’s basketball teams have began practice and are getting ready for the 2017-2018 basketball season. Last season was one of the most successful in recent years for the men’s team. The Men’s team had a 25-7 winning record, this is the third most wins in school history and the team won the GLVC division title. The Hawks return seven players from last years squad. Top returner is red-shirt junior Marcus Hinton. Hinton appeared in all 32 games, averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds last season.
“I’m trying to be a leader as much as I can because I didn’t have that position last year and make sure everybody sticks together like a well oiled machine,” Hinton said.
QU is set to begin its season under first year head coach Ryan Hellenthal. Hellenthal spent last season as an assistant coach for the Hawks.
“The new guys have acclimated themselves well they have worked extremely hard this fall both in our individual work and our weight room sessions. They have a chip on their shoulders, they’re hungry. They also understand the expectations here at Quincy University with what the team did last year,” Hellenthal said.
The Hawks begin their season November 10th, in Big Falls, Michigan against the Ferris State Bulldogs.
Last season the women’s team had a 5-23 record. The Hawks return six players from last years squad, lead by senior Anika Webster (Springfield, IL/ Springfield). Webster, a former GLVC Freshman of the Year, is coming off the 2016-2017 season in which she averaged 9.7 points and 4.1 rebounds. The senior looks to become the 23rd player in Hawks history to score 1,000 points in her career.
“Our goal is to have a better year than we did last year we have a lot of new girls, they all put in a lot of work over the summer and that has paid off in the preseason and we have seen that translate to regular season practices,” Webster said.
