The Quincy University women’s soccer team gathered in the Hawks Nest to watch the NCAA tournament selection show. The team cheered as they learned that they will be hosting the first two rounds of the upcoming NCAA Tournament at Legends Stadium.
The Hawks garnered the second seed and a first round bye in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament, trailing just Grand Valley State. The Hawks will be able to prepare for the tournament games like they have for other games, since the first couple of games are being played in familiar territory. Senior goalkeeper Megan Swanson was excited to hear the news when it broke.
“Its really awesome to get to host, we get to do our regular routine we don’t have to worry about traveling, getting on a bus, getting on a plane, or any of that stuff,” Swanson said.
Sophomore mid fielder Mo Rooney was also happy to find out Quincy will be hosting the first two rounds of the Midwest Region in the NCAA tournament.
“Its a relief, not traveling so all of our friends and family can come and watch like its a normal GLVC game. It’s very comforting to just be here in Quincy and be able to sleep in our own beds,” Rooney said.
QU will face off against the winner of the Ohio Valley/Bellarmine.
“We just played Bellarmine last Friday, we know them. And the Ohio Valley team we will be scouting and prepared for,” Swanson said.
The Hawks are currently 16-3-1 after a runner-up finish in the GLVC Tournament and were the GLVC regular season champions. Women’s soccer also garnered multiple postseason honors, including Mackenzie Rief who was named GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Allison Birke named GLVC Defensive Player of the Year, and Dave Musso named GLVC Coach of the Year.
“We’re going to do certain things different that are going to help us better prepare for our opponent once we figure out who that is, but mainly we are just going to keep doing what got us here. Its all about us, we are going to prepare like we always have,” Rooney said.
The next Quincy University Women soccer game will be held on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 12 p.m. at Legends Stadium. The Ohio Valley/Bellarmine game will be played Thursday (Nov. 9) also at 12 p.m.
