Hawks to Haunt HFC

By Von Washington III

Quincy University will be hosting its annual event, Halloween with the Hawks, this Sunday, Oct. 30, 5 -7 p.m. The event will be held in the Health and Fitness Center. It is a free event, and everyone is welcome.

Each year, the Quincy University Athletic Department hosts an event for community families. Each athletic team picks a type of game or activity for the kids to participate in. Candy and prizes are passed out all night, crafts are made, and games like the “cakewalk” are played.

This is an opportunity for QU athletes to interact with their fans, young and old.

“This is a really fun time for us athletes,”Herm Senor, a senior basketball player for the Hawks, said. “This event gives us a chance to give back to the community and our fans. The little kids are always happy to meet us and show off their costumes. It feels good knowing that we can make their day.”

Community members get to see QU athletes in a different environment.

“It is important that QU takes every opportunity to serve the community,” Travis Yates, assistant professor of communication, said. “It is important for the community to see the student athletes in a different light while also allowing the athletes to put their best foot foreword.”

The event has a great impact on children. One such child is Yates’ son, Lucas, who has attended Halloween with the Hawks the past two years.

“It’s a really great opportunity to bring Lucas to ‘daddy’s work’ and see his students in a different environment instead of the classroom,” Yates said. “It’s a chance for Lucas to interact and meet my students. It’s a very personable event.”
