QU MEDIA CODE OF ETHICS
Accuracy, Fairness and Truth
At QU Media, we are committed to providing content that is accurate, fair, and true. We double-check all the information we share. By doing this, we build trust with our audience. Fairness requires that all subjects of reporting are given an opportunity to share their perspectives. Journalists must avoid sensationalism and ensure balanced coverage, particularly in controversial topics. Accurate representation is key, avoiding misleading narratives and striving to minimize harm.
Respect and Inclusivity
Represent diverse perspectives fairly and respectfully. Avoid language or imagery that could be discriminatory, offensive, or harmful to any group or individual. Ensure that all students have a voice in our publications and that different ideas and thoughts contribute to the betterment of the campus. All students, including athletes and NARPs, will be accurately represented and equally judged. We will represent all aspects of race, gender, and religion at the university.
Ensure all information presented in news articles, podcasts, and broadcasts is fact-checked, balanced, and free from bias. Avoid spreading misinformation or manipulating facts for personal or organizational gain. It is essential that all content published by QU Media is factual, accurate, and truthful. Journalists must verify all information using reliable and credible sources before publication. Errors, if they occur, must be promptly corrected and clearly acknowledged. The goal is to present the truth in a manner that informs the community accurately and fairly. Journalists have a responsibility to report the truth with accuracy and fairness. Every effort must be made to verify facts, use reliable sources, and present information without distortion. Misleading narratives, exaggeration, or omission of key details compromise journalistic integrity.
Being committed to providing fair and accurate representation of all groups, particularly those who are marginalized, is essential. Reporters should seek to include a variety of viewpoints in their stories and actively work to ensure that no community or individual is excluded. The language used should also be sensitive to the identities, experiences, and backgrounds of all individuals. Student journalism should reflect the full spectrum of voices within the campus community. Coverage should be equitable, ensuring that all individuals and groups have the opportunity to be represented. QU Media values inclusion and works to make sure all perspectives, regardless of race, nationality, gender, sexuality, and backgrounds, are represented. We are dedicated to creating a space where everyone’s voice is heard and respected in our stories. Inclusion is at the heart of ethical journalism. As journalists, we must ensure that diverse perspectives are represented in our reporting, striving to amplify voices that are often marginalized. This means actively seeking sources from various backgrounds, reporting stories with cultural sensitivity, and avoiding language that perpetuates stereotypes. Respect the privacy of individuals by obtaining consent before recording or publishing personal information.
Transparency and Integrity
Honesty and openness are fundamental to ethical journalism. Reporters must respect privacy, obtain consent, and disclose relevant information about their sources and reporting methods. In cases where conflicts of interest exist, they must be disclosed to the audience to prevent the perception of bias. Transparency builds credibility and ensures that audiences can trust the information being presented.
Professionalism and Responsibility
Student journalists within QU Media must adhere to the standards of conduct in all aspects of their work. This includes adhering to ethical guidelines, maintaining respectful and ethical interactions with sources and colleagues, and many others. Reporters must refrain from unsubstantiated claims. Professionalism also extends to personal behavior, as reporters must maintain appropriate conduct that upholds the credibility of the business. Professionalism also extends to responsible social media use, ensuring that personal views do not compromise journalistic integrity. Upholding high ethical standards fosters credibility and reinforces journalism’s role in a democratic society.
Objectivity and Independence
Journalism requires avoiding conflicts of interest and reporting without influence from outside parties. QU Media must have stories that are not shaped by personal relationships, financial interests, or pressure from someone with authority. Independence means reporting with integrity, even when covering controversial or sensitive issues. Media must maintain editorial independence, ensuring that reporting is free from external influence or bias, including that of college administration, student organizations, or advertisers. Journalists must strive to remain objective and independent, avoiding personal biases that could influence their reporting. Stories should be pursued with an open mind, not a predetermined outcome.
Category
Correctly disclose the story type to ensure the reader knows what fact or opinion is while writing a story. Correctly categorizing what we create is an ethical obligation to the audience. Readers should be able to differentiate between factual reporting and editorial perspectives. All stories must be accurately categorized to ensure clarity. Clear distinctions between news, opinion, and other types of content must be made.
