What’s interesting about my current job?
Wilson is a global company. Because of this, I’ve had the pleasure of working with people from all over the world, making many really good friends along the way. Before working at Wilson, I had never thought about working on things that apply outside of the United States, but spending time with co-workers and friends of different cultures helps me see things from different perspectives, which is really important when creating marketing campaigns that are used all over the world. Not everything that makes sense here makes sense everywhere else!
How do I use various communication proficiencies in my work?
I can honestly say I use things I learned at QU every single day at work. While we have professional creatives at Wilson, I often use the graphic design, video editing and copy writing skills I learned in Francis Hall to help push projects forward, much to the appreciation of my team!
What surprised me about my career?
I really have to pinch myself sometimes that I got so lucky as to work in a sport and industry I’m passionate about. Before I got the internship at Wilson, I had never even thought about working for a big, global company like that…especially one in tennis! As an athlete, I always thought if you didn’t go pro or coach in the sport, that was the end of your time in it. It’s been so cool to see the sport from an angle I had never thought about existing!
Here’s my number one piece of advice for Communication undergrads:
Try as many things as possible! Write for the newspaper. Work at QUTV. Start a blog. Get experience in graphic design. Help a local company with social media. Experience in any one of these areas will help set you apart from others who focused all their energy in one area of Communication. Experience in these areas has helped me be more valuable to my employer and even helped me advance more quickly!
