Well on Nov. 22 college athletes will be allowed to wager money on professional sports. A ruling that was made on Oct. 28 to allow sports betting on all professional sports, which is a landmark decision by the NCAA.

The change, which was originally set to take effect Nov. 1, 2025, has been delayed to Nov. 22 after the Division I Board of Directors voted Oct. 28 to give schools more time to prepare. The adjustment also creates a 30-day rescission period in which member institutions can vote to overturn the new rule.

Under the revised policy, student-athletes will be allowed to bet on professional sports. This includes the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL in states where sports wagering is legal. However, betting on college athletics remains prohibited. NCAA officials said the update reflects the fast-changing landscape of legal sports betting nationwide.

“The goal is to ensure our policies reflect today’s environment. We must also maintain the integrity of college athletics,” the NCAA said in a statement.

Quincy University athletes are happy to hear the news about the rule change as some have become jealous of friends that are non athletes and have been able to sports bet this whole time.

Obviously there are some mixed emotions but the majority seem for the change.

“I think it’s about time we’re allowed to bet on professional sports, since we have no impact on the outcomes of those games,” Nolan May said..

Lawmakers have also taken notice. A group of U.S. House members sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker. They asked for details on how the NCAA will maintain compliance. They also inquired about preventing gambling addiction among student-athletes.

For universities, the change means expanding compliance programs and emphasizing education on responsible wagering. Several schools have already announced plans for mandatory gambling-awareness workshops before the rule goes into effect.

“When I turn 21, I will be eager to attempt to make some extra cash while watching sports. I enjoy watching baseball and football so it will make it more exciting for me,” Zack Kopsea said.

Violations of the remaining restrictions will still carry severe penalties. These include betting on college sports or sharing inside information. These penalties could include suspension or loss of eligibility.

The NCAA’s policy shift mirrors broader changes in the sports industry. Nearly 40 states now allow some form of legal sports betting. Professional leagues such as the NFL and NBA have formed partnerships with major sportsbooks.

The NCAA insists the new rule is not an endorsement of gambling. However, analysts say it shows an effort to adapt to the modern reality of sports.
