As the Kansas City Chiefs coming off yet another Super Bowl win, student reactions vary. There are quite a lot of Swifties on QU’s campus, and they made their enthusiasm for Taylor Swift and for the game of football known.  Since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce began dating around the beginning of September 2023, Swift and the NFL have been a hot topic throughout the year.

Allison Worley is one of the biggest Swifties on campus, she’s known for her love of Swift. When the “Era’s Tour” movie came out, Worley was there on opening night dressed like Swift in the ‘Love Story’ music video. She recently attended the Kansas City Super Bowl parade on Feb. 14 in hopes of seeing the NFL’s biggest couple.

“I’ve loved Taylor Swift ever since I was little, she was on my third birthday cake, I went to the Era’s Tour, I’m just obsessed with her. I love her with the Chiefs because I think she and Travis Kelce are endgame,” Worley said.

Cheyenne DeWeese has also been a longtime fan of Swift, attending the Eras tour last spring. She’s been involved with football on campus as a manager for the NCAA team.

“I’m really excited to see Taylor at the Super Bowl, and it’s awesome she got to go with Travis. The people who hate just don’t like seeing someone who’s so successful in every area be shown so much. I understand that people who watch the games are typically watching the game to watch football, but honestly, no one’s ever hated anyone else’s significant other for coming to the games, and really, people should give her more credit. She’s literally the best,” DeWeese said.. 

Piper Douglas is another Swiftie on campus known for her re-creation of the Eras tour in her Willer living room. She has a unique outlook on Swift’s presence, as she’s been a longtime fan of football, the Chiefs, and Swift. She thinks Swift is doing great things for the NFL, viewership and family dynamics. Douglas and her father have a house divided as she’s a Chiefs fan who grew up in Missouri and her father’s a Lions fan from Detroit. Her dad always wanted her to have Lions gear, so when he received the link to a crew neck of Jared Goff (the Lion’s quarterback) he bought it for his daughter immediately. Douglas is still keeping tabs and reading every article on her feed that has to do with Swift and Kelce.

“My dad and I call every week. We talk about what’s going on in the NFL, how the players are doing, we talk about injury reports, and he updates me on the Lions every week. We talk about the Chiefs, Taylor Swift, and Travis Kelce. We talk about the Kelce Brothers podcast, New Heights, and I update him on that. For me, football is all drama, and to him, it’s all stats, and the way we talk about it is so cute. We’ll talk for 45 minutes. This wasn’t a thing until Taylor Swift became a part of it, ” Douglas said.

Traditional football fans and Chiefs fans get upset with how much screen time Swift gets from the NFL, as she’s not on one of the football teams and not a football player. Some say she is helping the economy with her tours and merchandise, and she’s a main reason why the NFL viewer demographics for women have grown tremendously. The mix of Swifties and Super Bowl enthusiasm on campus is evidence of how sports culture and fandom are changing and serves as a reminder that different viewpoints only help to improve the whole experience by forging new relationships and solidifying those that already exist.
