Students call for more support for diverse religions on Quincy University campus

Quincy University, a school deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, is witnessing an evolution in its religious landscape as its student population grows. The historically Catholic institution is now home to a broader spectrum of faiths, reflecting the diverse beliefs of its student body. However, accommodating this growing variety has presented challenges.

Religion plays a significant role in many students’ lives, shaping their daily routines and values. Quincy University sophomore Anas Everette talked the importance of his faith, describing it as a guiding force.

“I would say my religion means a lot to me. It’s a way of life. How I operate on a day-to-day basis is pretty much based on my religion. It keeps me guided, keeps me on track, and helps me know right from wrong,” Everette said.

For students like Everette, the university’s predominantly Catholic environment can feel welcoming but sometimes limiting. While the university has robust support for Catholic practices, students from other religions often navigate their spiritual needs without comparable institutional resources.

Barah Abad, another sophomore, practices Islam, a faith with distinct rituals, such as praying five times daily while facing Mecca and adhering to dietary restrictions, including abstaining from pork. Despite these unique needs, Abad expressed gratitude for the university’s overall inclusivity.

“I have freedom, and I don’t have to do anything I’m not comfortable doing. It’s been a good experience and still is. People are pretty welcoming here,” Abad said.

Barah Abad seeks more support for religious diversity.

However, the availability of spaces and resources for non-Catholic students remains limited. While the campus does have a non-denominational chapel available to students of all faiths, it is clear that more could be done to foster an environment that accommodates diverse religious practices.

This lack of comprehensive support highlights an area of potential growth for the university as it seeks to create a more inclusive environment. As Quincy University expands, so does the need for spaces and programs that reflect the diversity of its community.

For now, students of various faiths continue to adapt and find ways to practice their beliefs in a predominantly Catholic setting. The evolving religious tapestry of Quincy University presents an opportunity for dialogue, understanding, and growth both for the institution and its students.
