North Campus dorms could solve room shortage
Quincy University is a growing campus with each incoming class being bigger than the last for the previous two years. This trend was so notable in fact that the class of ’27 had over 300 students marking the most for QU. The school growing has come with a lot of benefits and advantages, but also some negatives.
The biggest negative to note is living conditions and the dorms. With the housing lottery taking place recently, dorms have been talked about a a lot with people wanting certain dorms and rooms. A growing campus means fewer rooms available for students. Changes were already made to fit the freshman class, for example Padua Hall was transformed into a freshman dorm.
The change I feel that should be made is the reopening of North Campus dorms. This reopening would be largely beneficial for majors that have classes exclusively at North Campus. I am a communication major, and every class I had this year was at North Campus.
If I was able to use the dorms there it would be more convenient for transportation especially. This would be the main benefit of living there as there would only be a select few majors that would need or want to live there. While there would be benefits and positives, with every good there has to be a bad so I went to Kortarius Finley for more information.
Finley, who manages the housing on campus, said the main issue is the security factors involved with opening those dorms up. He stated how during COVID it was more acceptable since students could be more regulated there with the lack of cameras.
Finley says there would need to be renovations as well as up keep in factors such as a more complete cafe for students who would live there. So at least for the time being it would be more of a hassle to make sure everything is kept up to make those dorms livable.
The main change that will be made with more students on campus, will be fewer single rooms for students as rooms just will not be available. This brings more importance to the housing lottery as Finley stated it is the easiest way the school can make things fair for students and reward them.
While yes North Campus dorms would be nice to have, it just might be awhile until they could be a reality.
