Tony Lundy: Multimedia Journalist UpNorthLive

What’s challenging/interesting/rewarding about my current job?
Some things that are challenging are making every story idea work because you need to make sure not only the content is good, but that your story has individuals that would do interviews on the topic. I think it’s so interesting to hear someone else’s story and to be able to share that with the world. I think the job is very rewarding because it helps connect me with the world and see it in a new way.
How do I use various communication proficiencies in my work?
I use communication proficiencies every day to connect with audiences, sources, and colleagues. Strong verbal skills help me conduct clear, focused interviews and deliver accurate information on camera, while strong writing ensures my stories are concise, engaging, and easy to understand. I also rely on active listening and digital communication tools to build trust, gather facts quickly, and share news effectively across multiple platforms.
What surprised me about my career?
What surprised me about my career is how much it goes beyond just reporting the facts. I didn’t expect how quickly news changes and how adaptable I’d need to be on a daily basis. I’ve also been surprised by the strong community connections that come with this work and the impact even small stories can have on people’s lives.
Here’s my number one piece of advice for Communication undergrads:
Take every opportunity to practice your skills in real-world settings, whether it’s through internships, campus media, or networking events. The more hands-on experience you get, the more confident and adaptable you’ll become when stepping into a professional role.
Any other insight into life after graduation?
Life after graduation can be very overwhelming, but rewarding because it’s full of opportunity. You probably won’t land your dream job right away, and that’s okay. Every role helps you build connections and experience. Networking is just as important as your resume, so stay in touch with mentors, professors, and peers. Most importantly, being open to learning because being able to adapt will carry you further in life.
