Shane Hulsey: Broadcaster @ Prepcasts and GLVC Sports Network

What’s challenging/interesting/rewarding about my current job?
Putting all of the research I have done about a game to use in order to tell its story is very rewarding. I may not use half of that research, but in the end, you can’t predict sports, and that’s why I love them so much. You have to be able to think on your feet.
How do I use various communication proficiencies in my work?
Well, first of all, in my line of work, I am the voice of the action. Without me, there isn’t much substance. My job is to articulate what is happening in a way the audience will understand while simultaneously keeping them engaged. Also, when I am working with someone (an analyst), I have to be able to carry on a conversation and sound natural. It’s a juggling act, but it’s one of the things I love about my job.
What surprised me about my career?
The amount of people who want to see you succeed. Yes, it is a competitive field, but just like being on a sports team or in another group, the people want to see the person next to them succeed. They may get on you from time to time, but that’s only because they want the best out of you. It’s not personal. This fact has pushed me to work on my craft and improve on the skills and techniques that I am familiar with.
Here’s my number one piece of advice for Communication undergrads:
Take time to enjoy what you’re doing. It’s a lot of work, but in the end, it’s rewarding work. The work is not meant to be stressful; it is meant to challenge you and reward you with valuable experience. There is a purpose in everything you do in this major; realize this and take the time to enjoy and embrace the process.
What was your favorite part about QU?
The people. Just like almost anyone you ask, I was nervous when I first came to college, but as I came to make new friends and get to know my professors and the people on campus, I became more and more comfortable. Eventually, it felt like my second home. You won’t find many places with people as genuinely good as they are at QU.
