Wake Up Wednesday, SSC brews up way to connect Hawks

Do you ever experience an absence of midweek motivation while feeling groggy and sluggish as the semester progresses?

Or perhaps you were running behind schedule and didn’t have time to brew that cup of joe you immediately crave right when you wake up?

Not to worry! On Wednesday’s, head on over to the Student Success Center located beneath the Brenner Library, to begin your hump day off deliciously.

The SSC invites all students and faculty to stop in for a quick greeting or conversation, and a free cup (or two) of coffee, cappuccino, or hot chocolate from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Honestly, it’s just a great way for us as the SSC staff to interact with students over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, we just love getting to do it every Wednesday,” Cassie Phillips, SSC Administrative Assistant said.

The event, known as “WAKE UP Wednesday”, was initiated in 2020 by a group effort of SSC staff members finding coffee to be a connection to students.

“We were just trying to think of ways to serve our students and connect with them,” Kristen Liesen, director of experiential learning, said. “Coffee is great! We want students to know we are here to support them in all the areas of the Success Center.”

The students are what Liesen looks forward to most on Wednesday mornings, inclusive of providing them with professional experiences and services, and cheering them on along the way during their Quincy University career experience.

“We love it when they come in regularly and tell us about their week, or a success story about a class,” Liesen stated.

However, the faculty is appreciated just as much.

One of Liesen’s most fond memories includes Quincy University’s Professor of Art Karma Warma, M.F.A.

“We also love seeing faculty and staff,” Liesen said. “My favorite memory was when Karl Warma brought his art class to drink coffee while sketching.”

The coffee is already brewed and is waiting for you.

The tasty cappuccino flavors include white chocolate caramel and french vanilla. You also have the option to add in a little fun to your black coffee with a variety of flavored syrups, sugars, or whipped cream topping.

After you’ve been served, you can enjoy that warm cup of fuel in the SSC lounge area or happily take it to go with you while walking to your next class.

Michele Kirkham, coordinator of annual giving, looks forward to this event every week.

“It’s a great time for us just to come over with colleagues and come in to just see what’s going on at the SSC and just catch up,” Kirkham said. “And who doesn’t love a warm cup of coffee?”

Iced coffee is also served on the first Wednesday of a new month.

The SSC serves approximately 50 cups of coffee or hot chocolate every Wednesday and 80-100 cups of Iced coffee.
