The sound of bats hitting balls and the cheers of excited fans filled the air as Quincy University celebrated its 4th Annual Softball Alumni game this past Homecoming Weekend on October 4. This annual event features former players, coaches, and staff and commemorates the university’s proud softball history while connecting current students and alumni together as part of the spirit of community. The QU softball team also honored the 1985 NAIA National Championship team and invited all the players and coaches back from that team to attend the event.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the university’s softball field turned into a bustling laughter of nostalgia, rivalry, and community greets. A lot of players are represented by alumni from graduates of various past classes who returned to campus to see old teammates and relive their days of playing, as well as create new memories.

“This event has grown to become one of the highlights of our homecoming celebrations. It’s not solely about softball; it is about building our community together and paying homage to the legacy of this program, especially this year inviting back the National Championship team,” head coach Cathy Monroe said.

At 12 p.m., the game began, alumni players wore their old jerseys, and some even had the same numbers, while others wore the newer Quincy University gear. The crowd, which included students, faculty, family, and residents, cheered loud and enthusiastically when the teams took to the field.

The players showcased great athleticism, demonstrating the level of talent Quincy University has developed, while the competition was friendlier but still fierce when the teams exchanged the lead several times in the game. A mother and daughter duo was featured as well. Madison Peck and her mother Kim were participating in the alumni game as Madison is currently attending QU but her mother attended QU back in the 90s.

“It felt incredible to be back on the field with these amazing women,” Peck said. “We have all grown so much since our days as players, but as soon as we stepped on the diamond, that connection was instant.”

As the game came to an end, players and spectators converged to share stories and take photos to remember the day. Many were already expressing eagerness for next year’s game to help build the softball family at Quincy University. This year’s 4th Annual Softball Alumni Game will serve as a crucial reminder of the fact that although these players have moved on with their collegiate careers, their love of the game remains, and developing their connection continues with Quincy University.
