The highs and lows of making a March Madness bracket
Every year millions of people create a March Madness bracket with hopes of creating a perfect bracket. The odds of creating a perfect bracket is one in 9.2 quintillion. However, with informed basketball knowledge and picks the odds are roughly one in 128 billion. Either way it is a long shot to have a perfect bracket, something that has never been done before. Regardless of the odds, millions still make multiple brackets every year to try and do the impossible. With March Madness being directly linked to colleges around the country, thousands of college students make brackets. These students go through the highs and lows of March Madness.

When people make their picks they choose them for multiple reasons. Most people who make brackets have prior knowledge of the teams and the season. Some people just pick schools they know and or like. With a total of 67 games there are many upsets and unexpected winners throughout the whole tournament. One of the students at QU who made a bracket had some tough luck early on. Jonathan Van Hook picked his home town university St. Louis to win the whole bracket. His team ended up losing in the second round to Michigan.
“My bracket is lowkey cooked. I picked SLU to win it all, you know riding with my guys, being from St. Louis. We were the Cinderella story and ended up losing to number one ranked Michigan in the second round,” Van Hook said.
Other students made their picks and they believe they will be able to do the impossible by making a perfect bracket. These students will watch games the whole season and commit to trying to make a perfect bracket. One student is DJ Cross, who believed he had the first perfect bracket at the start of March. However, things haven’t gone his way.
“Man, I had a perfect bracket up until number 12 ranked High Point upset number 5 ranked Wisconsin in the first round. Since then my bracket has been messed up, so I don’t really care anymore to be honest. Unless my Michigan boys pull off a win,” Cross said.

Jovan Williams is a student at QU who made multiple brackets this year. Williams made more than one bracket because he believes that he needs to have different brackets for different reasons. One reason is to have a real bracket that he believes these teams are really going to win based off of what he has seen the whole season, and their ranking. He makes another bracket that he calls his fun bracket. This is where he picks teams he likes regardless of their rank or record.
“I always make a fun bracket and a real bracket. This year my fun bracket is actually doing better than my real bracket some how. I picked Illinois to win it all in my fun bracket and they are going off so far,” Williams said.
