Quincy University’s Student Government Association progresses with new plans
The Quincy University Student Government Association has been working hard over the course of the semester, improving campus life and creating plans for next year.
“I think we have a lot of great ideas moving into next year. A lot of opportunity to grow and get the student body more involved,” Erin Matzke said.
Matzke is a QU junior, the current SGA vice president, and next year’s president. She added that her time as VP has been very insightful, and she’s been able to learn by being part of the start-up SGA group.
Over the course of the past semester, SGA created a mission statement that aligns with its core values. The organization created the new mission statement together as a group, based on other schools’ mission statements, as well as the previous QU SGA mission statement.

The SGA decided to hold internal elections this year, deciding on roles for the upcoming year. However, next year the student body will be able to vote for the next president and vice president. Whoever is running will have time to campaign.
“Student government can build a greater community within QU and create true representation of the student body,” Ashley Zent, a sophomore at QU, said.
She added that even though she has not attended SGA events such as “Breakfast Tacos and Hotdogs” or “Debate Your Professor” she thinks they are fun opportunities to build true connections at QU.

These events, created by SGA, allow students to connect in unique ways. The “Breakfast Tacos and Hotdogs” event was held outside of the Helein dorm on QU’s campus. This event has been done twice in the spring semester and has become a hit for students on Friday nights. SGA members cook breakfast tacos and hot dogs for students and sell them between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Music plays as they wait for the crowd of students to arrive back to campus after a Friday night out.
“We just wanted to have fun, and we had some music going. It kind of felt like a little party outside of Helien and I know a lot of people had fun. It was so successful that we wanted to do it again because we still had some food leftover,” Luisa Andrede, senior at QU and president of SGA, said.
SGA is trying to get a budget approved for next year. Not only are clubs able to come to them to ask for money for events or club projects, but SGA also takes new club requests. New clubs can form under SGA’s support, such as the new QU Spirit Club that formed this semester.
The club is working to create online check-ins for students who are returning in the fall of 2026. This will enable students to move into the residence dorms immediately, rather than having to complete the in-person check-in process at Francis Hall. Additionally, they are working to update the outdoor spaces on campus.
QU Student Government Association is always open to new members. If there is interest in joining, any questions, or requests, please contact them at sga@quincy.edu.
