Quincy University’s sorority, Sigma Phi Eta, shared the love with Crushgrams on Valentines Day

Quincy student Dalton Schell considered himself more than excited to receive a Crushgram from a fellow teammate this Valentine’s Day.

QU sorority Sigma Phi Eta held its annual Crushgram fundraiser prior to the holiday. Members of the sorority sat outside The Cafe in the Student Center for a few days before Valentine’s Day and sold paper cutouts of orange slices that say “I Have A Crush On You”.

Students buy the cutouts and write a message on them along with the name of a person they want to receive the soda. On Valentine’s Day receivers of these messages can pick up the cutout taped to a can of Crush soda outside The Cafe.

This year, in comparison to last, the price of the Crushgrams rose from $1 to $3 and one student, Siobhan Rogers, did not consider herself a fan of the price increase.

“I mean I think the idea is cool, but I’d rather just go buy my own can of Crush soda from the store, for what like a dollar, and write a note on it. $3 is a lot,” Rogers said.

Another student and member of the sorority, Isabella Weiner, while in support of the price change stated that the Crushgrams weren’t in her price range.

“I would probably buy one, I just didn’t have $3 on me, or any money in my Venmo,” Weiner said.

The Crushgram fundraiser is relatively new with 2025 being its second year up and running. Sorority president Alexis Stufflebeam didn’t know what to expect, so with preparation, research and experience from last year, changes were made.

“The event did well, but we only just broke even after covering the cost of everything. Since it went over better than we thought, we wanted to continue it this year, but we knew we needed to change things up to make it more sustainable,” Stufflebeam said.

This year each case of soda cost $8.69, which is about $2 more than last year. In addition to that, the average Crushgram sold by other fundraising groups went for $5, so Sigma Phi Eta met in the middle and sold their Crushgrams for $3.

The profits go back to the sisterhood and contribute to their philanthropy. Additionally, the funds contribute to the sororities Galentine’s, de-stress nights, spring formal, and a new tradition they started consisting of adopting a child off the Angel Tree and buying gifts together as a group.

The sorority plans to continue on its tradition of selling Crushgrams for Valentine’s Day next year.
