Teamwork lays strong foundation for life after football

With the conclusion of the 2024 NCAA football season, the spotlight has shifted from the gridiron to the future. For this year’s senior class, the end of their playing days marks the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with promise, change, and the unknown.

The seniors have much to celebrate. They’ve not only set records but also laid a strong foundation for the program’s future. Still, the question lingers: what’s next for these players?

Playing college football is often described as a bittersweet journey—full of twists and turns, with each player’s path unique. Yet one certainty remains: every football career eventually comes to an end.

“Now that the season is over, I’ll be starting an internship with the juvenile detention facility in town this winter,” said retired football player Tim Gomez. “Along with that, I’ll be getting a job and just focus on my classes so I can graduate in the fall.”

Gomez is just one senior who has played football since he was a kid and now must learn what life is like without the sport. For some, the transition away from the sport they’ve dedicated their lives to will be monumental. Football has been more than a game; it’s been a way of life.

While playing may be over the lessons learned from coaches and the values they have gathered will stay with them forever.

But the legacy these seniors leave behind extends beyond the field. While playing may be done for the seniors, it’s what they did off the field that will never be forgotten.

Graduate transfer Jai Williams highlighted the bonds built over the season, calling this year one of “firsts” for many players.

“The fact that I’ve been able to share that with them on the field and off the field. They’ve treated me like family and accepted me with open arms from the moment I stepped on campus,” Williams said. “We’ve gone out to eat together and really bonded, These friendships will last a lifetime.”

As these seniors navigate life after football, their experiences on and off the field have equipped them to handle the twists and turns ahead. For this resilient group, the road may be uncertain, but their ability to adapt is undeniable.
